Russia and Poland in new environment

The international Russian - Polish Conference “Russia and Poland in new environment: are there opportunities for cooperation?” has become an inalienable part of the X RISA Convention. Exemplified by the bilateral Russian-Polish relations a number of issues were discussed such as economic and political transition, foreign policy formation and the influence of European processes on bilateral ties. This conference has come to be a logical continuation of close contacts between MGIMO researches and their Polish colleagues, although slightly less intensive in recent crisis years.

The discussion of transformations in Russia and Eastern Europe was launched by the President of the Regional public organization «Center for Strategy», state secretary of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic / Russian Federation (1991 - 1992), professor Gennady Burbulis.

The Conference has brought together the leading Russian experts on East-European and Polish studies, including the director of the Institute of Economics Ruslan Grinberg, the head of the department on disarmament and conflict management of the Primakov National research institute of world economy and international relations of RAS, Professor of MGIMO Andrey Zagorsky, the head of the academic program “International economic and political studies” of the Institute of Economics of RAS Svetlana Glinkina, the vice-president, the chairman of the Executive Board of “VTB24” Mikhail Kozhokin, chief research fellow of the Institute of Social Studies of RAS, Professor Inessa Yazhborovskaya, director of the Centre for situational analysis of the Primakov National research institute of world economy and international relations of RAS Irina Kobrinskaya, vice-rector of MGIMO Evgeny Kozhokin, columnist of the web-portal Rubaltic.ru Alexander Nosovich, head of the department of the Institute of Economics of RAS Boris Frumkin. Famous experts in political and legal studies, the vice-dean of the International law Department of MGIMO, Professor Alexander Volevodz, associate professor of the Saint-Petersburg University Andrey Novikov, head of the Department of political theory of MGIMO Tatiana Alekseeva shed light on the issues of transformation in Russian political and legal systems.

The Polish delegation consisted of the researches with rich practical experience in the sphere of international relations, with diplomats and ambassadors among others, as well as famous economists and social scientists. The delegation included the director of the Program “Open Europe” of the Stefan Batory Foundation, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Poland in Russia (2014 - 2016) Katarzyna Pełczyńska-Nałęcz, major coordinator of the Institute of East-European studies Vladislav Sokolovsky, the president of the Association for Polish-Russian cooperation Jerzy Smolinsky, opinion journalist, Professor of the Sorbonne University in Paris L. Stomma and Professor of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań R. Kaminsky. The dean of the Legal Department of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań L. Moskva, and the member of the Polish Society of criminal science, Professor of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań K. Koletsky introduced to the audience the results of the political and legal transformation in Poland. The head of the Centre for post-soviet studies of the Institute of Economics of RAS L. Vardomsky, the director of the Institute of Central and East-European studies M. Philippovich, Professor of the Institute of Central and East-European studies A. Vasilev, Professor of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, member of the Commission for cooperation with Poland of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna V. Navrotchic, Professor of the Institute of Central and East-European studies M. Radzivon, Professor M. Narinsky, director of the Centre for East-European studies of the Voronezh State University O. Mikhalev, senior lecturer of MGIMO S. Sklyarov, academic secretary of Odintsovo branch of MGIMO M. Andriyanova presented the results of their analyses of bilateral relations from different viewpoints.

In addition to initially planned topics, the discussion focused on the situation in Ukraine. Special attention was drawn to the linguists specializing in the Polish language: head of the Department of Central and East-European languages Y. Zelenov, Candidate of Philological Studies Galina Lesnaya, Professor of MGIMO N. Selivanova.

The Conference was organized and moderated by young researches of MGIMO representing Russia as well as Poland: assistant of rector A. Golubova, postgraduate student U. Moskva, Candidate of Economic Sciences A. Gabarta, Candidate of Historical Sciences, research associate of the Centre for North-European and Baltic studies V. Vorotnikov, deputy director of the MGIMO Alumni Association E. Volsky.

Students specialized in Polish studies actively participated in the discussions.
